STEM Lunch with Michael Agnew

This week our high school students entered the world of nanotechnology, invisibility and robotics with NCS Alumni member, Michael Agnew. Michael finished his studies at NCS in 2011 and went on to study Mathematics at the Australian National University and the University of Wollongong. Michael has a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and the important role it plays in the future of our planet.

Streaming from his passion for STEM, Michael, along with his brother Daniel Agnew (NCS Alumni), have collaborated with other enthusiasts to create their own gaming company Garage Games. Michael presented to NCS students on careers in the STEM industry and starting up a business from scratch in the 21st century. He finished his talk with an insightful tour into the world of ‘Reign’, Garage Games’ most recent addition.

Eyes were opened as Michael spoke about the possibilities of stem cell research, renewable resources created through nanotechnology and the amazing designs of structural engineering. Here are what our students had to say about the talk:

'The thing I found interesting was the game design and nanotech, which is using carbon atoms to make small pathways. A group in India made a way to make clean water using nanotech by making the filter holes small so only water particles could get through and nothing else.' Kieren Schofiled Year 9

'What I found interesting was how Michael showed us a video of a metal form that was technically liquid. We also got to see the cards from ‘Reign’. I found it cool how they finished the game and how they were in university when they decided to make a game. I also thought it was interesting how 3D printers are being made able to print using nanotechnology.' Micah Donovan Year 7
