On Monday 14 September, Year 10 Maths hosted University of Sydney Senior Lecturer Dr Robert Marangell for a virtual visit.
Dr Marangell talked about careers which use mathematics and students who have studied his subject. Both areas were surprisingly diverse in scope - Dr Marangell himself started as a history and philosophy major before moving into Maths. He lectures Science, Engineering, Economics and even Law students. He explained his current area of research and talked about the use of Maths in every aspect of modern life, from mobile phones to the internet. He took the class through a practical activity, demonstrating how Maths is not just about numbers but also about studying geometry, shapes and surfaces.
It was a great visit and helped students appreciate the diverse application and use of Maths today.
